Which utility serves you in Dodge County?

Several utilities serve Dodge County, and each sets its own rules for solar credits. We confirm yours by address before we design your system.

UtilityWhere it servesHow extra solar power is credited
Alliant EnergyBeaver Dam, Mayville, Horicon, Fox Lake, Randolph, Theresa, Clyman and nearby areasSystems of 20 kW or less: the meter runs backward within each billing period. Net extra at the end of the period is paid at avoided cost, which averaged $0.04254 per kWh as of January 2026.
We EnergiesParts of the county, including areas around Lomira and Iron RidgeSystems under 300 kW: use and export net out each billing period. Net extra is credited at 3.636 cents per kWh on the flat rate, as of January 2026.
Waupun Utilities, Juneau Utility Commission, Hustisford UtilitiesThose cities and the village of HustisfordCity-owned utilities that set their own rules. We check them for your address.

Because extra power at the end of a month earns much less than you pay for power, we size systems to use most of the output at home.

  • Focus on Energy. Focus on Energy pays $600 per kW, up to $2,400, for homeowners who buy their system, as of November 2026. Leased systems do not qualify.
  • Battery rewards. Alliant Energy customers can enroll a FranklinWH or Tesla Powerwall 3 battery in Smart Hours for $100 per kWh, plus $100 per kW each year. See solar rebates and utility rewards.
  • Tax breaks. Solar equipment is exempt from Wisconsin sales tax, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax.

The 30% federal tax credit for homeowner-owned solar ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. With a lease or prepaid lease, the leasing company can still claim the 30% commercial credit for a limited time and pass the savings to you. Read whether solar is worth it in Wisconsin and what changed with the tax credit.

Solar permits in Dodge County

Each city and village issues its own building permits. In Mayville, for example, the city requires separate building and electrical permits. In the towns, the building permit comes from the town under the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code.

Twelve towns, including Ashippun, Fox Lake, Hustisford, Lomira and Rubicon, use the county Land Use Code. There, and within 1,000 feet of a lake or 300 feet of a river or stream, Dodge County Land Resources and Parks may also require a land use permit. Your utility must approve the system before it turns on. We check which permits apply, file them with the utility application, and meet the inspector.
