Going solar in Colorado
Xcel Energy serves most of the Front Range, Black Hills Energy serves Pueblo and Cañon City, and co-ops and city utilities serve much of the rest of Colorado. Each one sets its own solar credit rules, so we confirm yours before we design your system.
Most Colorado utilities credit the extra power your system sends to the grid on your bill, and Xcel customers can roll those credits forward. Utilities with fewer than 5,000 customers can set their own rules. Colorado does not charge state sales tax on home solar equipment, and solar does not add to your property tax.
The federal tax credit for homeowners who buy solar ended after 2025. Our prepaid lease, the Solar Price Reset, is still open to qualifying homeowners, with systems in service by the end of 2027. Farms and businesses may still qualify for federal tax credits, so talk with your tax advisor.
