Going solar in Michigan
DTE Energy and Consumers Energy serve most of Michigan, and co-ops and city utilities serve many rural areas and much of the Upper Peninsula. We confirm your utility and its solar rules for your address before we design your system.
Michigan uses inflow/outflow billing. You pay your normal rate for power you pull from the grid, and power your system sends out earns a credit at a rate set by your utility, below the retail rate. Since 2023, Michigan lets you size a system up to 110% of your past 12 months of use. Because outflow earns less, we size each system to the power you use and show you the numbers with and without a battery.
The federal tax credit for homeowners who buy solar ended after 2025. Our prepaid lease, the Solar Price Reset, is still open to qualifying homeowners, with systems in service by the end of 2027. Farms and businesses may still qualify for federal tax credits, so talk with your tax advisor.

Michigan solar questions
Do you install solar in Michigan?
Yes. Wolf River Electric designs, permits, installs and services solar, batteries, standby generators and EV chargers for Michigan homes, farms and businesses. Call us to check your address.
How does inflow/outflow billing work?
You pay your normal rate for power you use from the grid. Power your system sends out earns a credit set by your utility, lower than the retail rate. That is why we size systems to the power you actually use.
Is there a solar tax credit for Michigan homeowners in 2026?
The federal credit for homeowners who buy solar ended after 2025. Our prepaid lease is still open to qualifying homeowners. Ask us what it would look like for your home.
